OPPO A5 (2020) Roadtest: Outstanding Battery Life, Wonderful Price

If Oppo is a new company to you then some might say you're unsure if Oppo makes good phones. Don't worry, though, as Oppo is well regarded in China and has spent a number of years preparing for its release in Europe & elsewhere, and with innovative devices like the Oppo Reno 10X impressing already.

The Oppo A5 2020 doesn't try to be such a top level smartphone, however it sure does deliver an attractive features at an excellent cost. And if you've been looking at a Motorola G8 Plus or the Moto One series phone, then the savings given by Oppo's A5 2020, and its large battery, present a case to buy.

A5 2020 Display And Design

Dimension: 163.6 x 75.4 mm x 9.1mm
Phone Weight: approx 195 g
Colours: Dazzling White or Mirror Black
Screen Size: 6.5-inch LCD, 1600 x 720 res
3.5mm headphone jack
Rear fingerprint scan sensor

With no immediate indicators the Oppo A5 2020 is a budget phone. Its semi-reflective rear, emblazoned with an Oppo logo transfer and the words "designed for A-series", has a bright shne, while the cameras unit & back fingerprint sensor have been positioned in a tidy way. The problem is, that the mirror black color of this phone is more a grey, really is a real fingerprint magnet, and we found that scanner a little high in its position, too close to the cameras.

The same can be said of the front 6.5-inch screen is adequate, and yet not awkward, is held together with trim bezel on top & sides & just a tiny bit towards the 'chin' section. there is a dew drop notch on the top of the screen, and this is where the selfie camera is positioned, & it's not distracting and hasn't been annoying for any apps that we've been using. Above this is a small speaker grille, and this is great when making phonecalls, which we have found not to always be the case with, say, Xiaomi handsets that have a similar design.

Indeed, the display is not the best resolution, giving HD+ resolution. That's like the 720p TVs of old, and while it doesn't look blocky in its depiction of details, a Full HD+ screen, like you get with the Motorola G8 Plus. Yes, this phone is slightly cheaper than that Motorola, and yet those extra pixels would help make a large change.

There is another frustration with the device's display: peel off the plastic screen protector (just as we do with all review phones) and that top layer isn't the greatest at stopping fingerprint marks, & this is a thing we have rarely looked at since the Huawei P10. It doesn't ruin your the phone, however you may have some more rainbow smears than you'd like to.

Elsewhere the OPPO A5 2020 is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and there's no reason you can't plug headphones into it, & the lower speaker is great on providing audio for games & audio.

A5 2020 Battery & Performance

Snapdragon 665 CPU
3GB RAM
64 GB on board storage
MicroSD card expansion
5,000mAh Battery
USB Type-C port
ColorOS 6.0 OS

Perhaps the most impressive thing about The OPPO A5 (2020) is the battery lifespan. Despite the body not being too thick, it's a big 5000mAh cell in there. Considering the Samsung Galaxy S10 is 3,400mAh in comparison, you'll understand potential for just how much more battery power this smartphone can offer.

During the time that we've been reviewing The OPPO A5 2020 , it is been delivering about 28 hours of use per charge. If you're not constantly on your phone That's going to give 2 days of life. If you're using your phone aplenty, playing games and all manner of apps, well then you will still get a full day of use no problems.

Charging is not ultra quick, but it's done by USB C, not the micro USB like some previous models of handsets.

Battery life is helped by some key specifications: the display, as we've said, is not the highest resolution screen around; while its processor, a Snapdragon 665, isn't the highest performing processor on the market.

Considering the previous point, however, it is not a problem because we've been able to play apps such as Archero with no issues, while the main game South Park: Phone Destroyer has responded lag-free & with clear scrolling. Indeed, this chipset is the same processor you'll find in Motorola's G8 Plus.

However, the chipset & amount of RAM (at 3GB), can at times let the handset down. Whether that is a couple of seconds wait for an app to load up, or a buffering while an game is getting ready, it is these small issues that let the user know you're not on a flagship device.

The OS is Oppo's long-established ColorOS, which based on Google's Android, upon which ColorOS lays, but with their own upgrades. Because of this we do not feel the user interface as clear-cut as an Android phone proper. Things such as many notifications from battery management, and nearly every app being placed across a few pages as well as numbered notifications we found annoying at times.

With that said, there are some good features such as security app for safety, high levels of customization within notifications, and a quick access to favourite apps panel, & app duplication to make use the Dual SIM , but the system will not pull backups for the second app.

Using two SIMs also does not disallow expanding upon the 64GB on-board storage, as there's a dedicated microSD card slot. Very handy if you want heaps of photos, videos & apps on your device - an extra 64GB is unlikely to cost more than a tenner.

A5 (2020) Cameras

Rear Camera:
Main: 12-megapixel, f/1.8 aperture
Ultra-wide: 8 Megapixel, f/2.25 aperture
Two 2MP depth sensors, f/2.4
Selfie Camera: 8MP, f/2.0

In terms of its cameras, Oppo's A5 2020 the four camera system, however as 2 of those on the rear being depth sensors, and the ultra-wide camera does not function you can think of the setup more as a one lens system.

The camera app is a little bit slow, however it is not horrible for an base model device. We've had no problems shooting in low-light conditions, & close up works a treat. this is a bit of a oddity in a few phones & cameras.

There is not a lot of bells and whistles though. You will get HDR to level out any shadow & highlight the details, but you won't get anything to cater for low light shooting and, as I said, there's no wide option available.

You will get a 2x & a 5x digital zoom, which crops into images, however still gives a 12MP photo. And as for the ultra-wide camera, the website says for panoramic pictures, and we assume that this sensor is only used for pan-to-shoot panoramics, even with the angle of view when in this mode isn't wide. This can be confusing.

Most of the photos we have taken with the phone's camera have good appearance in good lighting conditions, but low light causes inevitable softness. And yet, as for viewing on a phone screen or for sharing on social media, that's adequate.

On the front, there is an 8MP camera which has the usual glut of Oppo's smoothing and face-thinning effects which, we are happy to never use. Each to their own, though, we know there are fans of the 'beautification' options.
